Dear fellow Angelenos, Eagle Rock neighbors, and those of you visiting us,

I would like to invite you to join me for SUNDOWN SCHOOLHOUSE: PRACTICING MOVING at the glorious art center in my neighborhood, just up the valley from the dome, the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock. It is housed in a sublime cathedral-like Spanish-style space that was originally a library. For the next five weeks it will be converted into an open practice hall and headquarters for movement. Read below for a few ways that you can participate.

Looking forward to moving with you,
Fritz

PARTICIPATE:

+ Come to the OPENING Saturday, November 14th, 8-10pm. Bodycity will lead us in movements. See the project headquarters and display. View the new photos by Eve Fowler. There will be some produce from that mornings farmers market.

+ Join me for DAILY MOVEMENT PRACTICE Mondays - Saturdays, noon - 2pm, (except Nov 26 - Dec 1) as I host an open forum for warm-ups, stretches, exercises, or whatever sort of movement you want to lead, follow or practice. Some days I will be alone, doing my own thing like working on my balancing poses and handstands, other days will feature scheduled movement leaders (see the website), and then other days might just be you and me, learning from and teaching each other. (Come dressed to move, or try on the warm-up clothes provided. I will be transforming my old clothing into outfits for moving to be displayed and worn throughout my residency.)

+ Visit the project HEADQUARTERS Mondays through Fridays, 10am - 6pm or Saturdays 10am- 2pm located in the adjacent exhibition space, featuring a small dance reading library, new photographs of movement practice by Eve Fowler, videos by Jacinto Astiazarán of dance projects by Bodycity and Sundown Schoolhouse, other ephemera from their past projects, and a geodesic dome tent where visitors will be welcomed to get comfortable, lounge, read, meet, watch, or recover from movement practice.

+ Come to the CLOSING event and video screening Saturday, December 19th, 8-10pm.Videos produced during the five week run of Practicing Moving by Jacinto Astiazarán, Krysten Cunningham, and Fritz Haeg are screened.

SUNDOWN SCHOOLHOUSE:
Sundown Schoolhouse: Practicing Moving pays special attention to the activity and idea of practice. Physical movements, routines, and exercises like yoga, stretching, martial arts, and dance warm-ups strive for an ideal condition that is never achieved. They are intended to have an effect on the person doing them, not on those watching. Practicing Moving presents these movements in an open forum of mutual education as both public ritual and private performance.

Practicing Moving is part of the on-going Sundown Schoolhouse series, which evolved out of the Sundown Salon gatherings held at Fritz Haeg’s Los Angeles geodesic dome from 2001 through 2006. Schoolhouse activities have included day long movement lessons at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, “expression” workshops at the ICA in Philadelphia, gardening seminars at Arthouse in Austin as a part of the series of Edible Estate gardens, urban wildlife talks at Casco in the Netherlands, and the 2008 Whitney Biennial as a part of the on-going Animal Estates initiative, in addition to the founding meetings at the dome which have included yoga classes, a book club, and a full fall season in 2006 which featured 24 visiting teachers from many disciplines.
