Hana van der Kolk is a dancer, choreographer/improviser, teacher, writer, and explorer of movement and voice in many forms. She is primarily interested in the intersections between improvisation and choreography, the theatrical in dance, working in outdoor and public spaces, and in a rigorous investigation of presence in performance. She works regularly with choreographer Deborah Hay and her adaptations of Hay's work as well as her own works have been presented in many New York venues and have been performed in public parks throughout NYC. Her new adaptations of Hay's dances, including a dance film shot in 12 New York City locations, will be presented at Highways in Los Angeles this fall. Hana has taught dance at many schools and centers including Skidmore College, Sarah Lawrence College, the National Dance Museum, Movement Research and Earthdance. Her writing on dance will appear it an upcoming issue of Contact Quarterly. Hana is also a certified yoga teacher and has taught diverse populations. She is the recipient of grants from the Puffin Foundation and the UCIRA.
