Annemarieke Spitzen, Ravon {Animal Lessons, Utrecht}

Annemarieke Spitzen-van der Sluijs was born August 7, 1977, and presently lives in Winssen with her husband and small daughter. She works as an ecologist with the RAVON Foundation (Reptiles Amphibians and Fish Research, Netherlands) as a project leader for the Research and Protection team. In this function she is involved in many different projects, from inventorying the moor frogs of Groningen and participating in discussions about the conservation goals for Natura2000 regions to carrying out research on the slowworm and writing scientific articles. Being able to combine writing reports and articles with performing fieldwork is one of the things which makes working for RAVON so attractive for Annemarieke. All her field observations are presented on www.telmee.nl . Anyone can use this site to present all the animals (and plants) they observe in nature. In that way we can all get a good picture of the animals and plants in The Netherlands - and that in turn is very important for protecting nature.

Annemairieke's work with reptiles and amphibians is not limited to 9-to-5. She regularly goes on excursions organised by RAVON, or goes hiking in search of reptiles. She has created a paradise for amphibians in her garden. The pond in the garden is populated with green frogs, small water salamanders and newts. She has the greatest pleasure in following the development of these amphibians closely each year. Annemarieke finds the total experience of nature important. It is less important to knowing precisely what a particular plant, bird or salamander is called, but being able to pause and enjoy the ingenious manner in which all of nature is interwoven, and see how the plants and animals have adapted to their situations, will repeatedly afford moments of amazement at the beautiful things in nature.

Annemarieke is werkzaam als ecoloog bij Stichting RAVON (Reptielen Amfibieën Vissen Onderzoek Nederland), www.ravon.nl. Daar werkt zij als projectleider bij het team Onderzoek & Bescherming. Binnen deze functie is zij betrokken bij veel verschillende projecten. Van het inventariseren van heikikkers in Groningen en het deelnemen aan discussies over de instandhoudingdoelstellingen van Natura2000 gebieden tot het uitvoeren van onderzoek naar de hazelworm en het schrijven van wetenschappelijke artikelen. Het kunnen combineren van het schrijven van rapporten en artikelen met het uitvoeren van veldwerk, is één van de dingen die het werken bij RAVON voor Annemarieke zo aantrekkelijk maakt. Zo krijgen we een goed beeld van de verspreiding van dieren en planten in Nederland. En dat is weer heel belangrijk voor de bescherming van de natuur.
