arriving to the American grid and LA from the Pacific over Mid-Wilshire, Koreatown, Los Feliz, Silverlake and Hollywood

…was a welcome place to be, approaching LAX and home (where I’ll look forward to more time in the new year) after 14 hours of Pacific Ocean.

On January 10th, 2014, SYDNEY TO MELBOURNE…

Sydney to Melbourne

Sydney to Melbourne

…this morning after two and a half weeks of reading, writing, yoga, swimming and general beach-bumming in the iconic beach town – now headed to the more serious buttoned-up Ozzie city for a quick visit on the way home for some art and garden  visits.

On July 28th, 2013, RETURNING TO MINNEAPOLIS – SAINT PAUL…

over the Twin Cities suburbs

over the Twin Cities suburbs

…for five weeks to work on the imminently opening show at the Walker Art Center “Fritz Haeg: At Home in the City” has me approaching the airport over the familiar outer suburbs of the Twin Cities that I grew up in and starting to get my mind back into thinking deeply about cities and being at home in them.

On May 11th, 2013, UNDER THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN KUNGSTRÄDGÅRDEN…

a Saturday walk in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm

…in Stockholm this afternoon where everyone is soaking up the rays after a long winter, and though it is still a bit chilly to my sensitive LA constitution, the sun is already leaning towards it’s summer solstice here with sunset at 9:15 and sunrise at 4:15.

pausing at the Tiber heading from Testaccio to Trastevere

…on the way from Amsterdam to Abruzzo for the final seasonal chapter of Domestic Integrities at Pollinaria is warm sunny summery deep breath of ancient urbanism before we head East for the hills.

On October 8th, 2012, GELLERT BATHS…

Art Nouveau interior and entry to Gellert Baths, Budapest

…the Succession style structure built on the site of thermal bath springs going back centuries, offered a relaxing last few hours in Budapest, on my last project visit, to enjoy a renowned facet of the town I had yet to experience on previous trips – too busy with gardens and work. looking over the Hollywood Hills into the LA basin from over the Valley

…is enjoyed flying out of Burbank, a welcome small-town airport experience and alternative to not-fun LAX, on my way to NYC via a one day stop for a talk in Albuquerque at the ISEA Conference.

On September 1st, 2012, DRIVING HOME…

the five out of the Bay Area and two  into LA

…to LA from the Bay area south the five, over on the 210, down the two deposits you through a pass framing my favorite view of the city, with downtown and my hill framed by the sloping foothills, welcoming me back for a few tranquil days back home.

On July 10th, 2012, SUNSET LA WELCOME…

On July 9th, 2012, FCO>LAX…

leaving Fiumicino over Ostia

…from Rome to L.A. was only part of a much longer day, starting with getting in a car at the Pollinaria farm in Abruzzo at 1am to a Fiumicino bound bus in Pescara and ending with a long meeting and dinner at the Hammer Museum in Westwood right off the plane, followed by immediate collapse at first sight of welcome bed.

On June 25th, 2012, STAYING AT THE MAK IN VIENNA…

MAK apartment windows open for some welcome breeze from the Stadtpark below

…in an apartment within the museum complex is pretty cushy in slick modular mobile modern open plan digs overlooking and collecting cool breezes from the Stadtpark below, and getting ready for an event  tomorrow night involving Europe Domestic Integrity Field production in the garden accompanied by drummers and 12 loaves of my special spelt bread that I’ll be baking right before my lecture in the central hall.

On June 24th, 2012, FLYING AND RE-KNITTING…

re-knitting while flying

…kept me busy for most of the night and morning making my way from Mildred’s Lane in rural Pennsylvania to Vienna, via a ride from friends to Penn Station, a LIRR train to Jamaica, an Airtrain to Terminal 2, a plane to CDG, a 35 minute walk to the connecting gate, to Vienna on another flight, and a short ride to the MAK (where I’ll be talking on Tuesday) – during most of which I was able to continually practice my newly acquired and still in formation knitting skills from a workshop in London at the Sundown Schoolhouse of Queer Home Economics last week, and later with the help of an older Norwegian lady who saw me struggling with the needles in the museum lobby and offered to show me how they knit in Norway – where she learned at age 5 to do the fast snazzy knitting and pearling stitches she shared with me – and since my first attempts involved lots of dropped stitches and general chaos, I’m just knitting from that thing to another..making me think I could keep using these same lineal feet of variously colored and fibered yarns forever and never arriving at any permanent form…can’t, put, those, needles, down, just one more row…

On June 19th, 2012, FLYING OVER THE DOME…

over the dome

…this evening after 24 hours checking in on the homefront, and now headed ‘back east’ as they refer to it here ‘out west’ to New York City where I’ll be planting a big round wild edible medicinal herbal pollinator attractor garden (with plants and dirt from McEnroe Organic Farm and the amazing Annie Novak of Eagle Street Rooftop Farms & Growing Chefs) in the MOMA sculpture garden tomorrow in preparation for a fall premiere installation of Domestic Integrities.

On May 9th, 2012, L.A. SUNSET LANDING…

LA sunset landing

…was a welcoming amber view back to the city last night, just able to glimpse my little mound of a hill out the window through the hazy amber veil as we made the familiar approach and decent across the endless sprawl segmented by the occasional freeway and trapped between the chain of mountains to the north and east and by the ocean to the south and west.

On May 8th, 2012, TAXIING BY THE ENTERPRISE…

Enterprise sitting on a 747 at JFK

…was a pretty cool thing to see as we made our way down the tarmac and spied the space shuttle casually hanging out on the back of a tricked out NASA 747 transporter – which had delivered it from DC a few days ago – and where it continues to rest as it awaits travel to it’s new home on the Intrepid Sea & Space Museum in NYC.
