{"id":10570,"date":"2012-08-03T10:58:56","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T17:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/wikidiary\/?p=10570"},"modified":"2012-08-09T09:30:06","modified_gmt":"2012-08-09T16:30:06","slug":"on-august-3rd-2012-newton-and-helen-mayer-harrison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/archive\/2012\/08\/03\/on-august-3rd-2012-newton-and-helen-mayer-harrison\/","title":{"rendered":"On August 3rd, 2012, NEWTON AND HELEN MAYER HARRISON&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10571\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10571\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theharrisonstudio.net\/?page_id=214\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-10571\" title=\"Portable Orchard\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/wikidiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-03-harrisons-191x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-03-harrisons-191x150.jpg 191w, https:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-03-harrisons.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10571\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portable Orchard, Newton Harrison and Helen Mayer Harrison, 1972-73<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8230;the trail-blazing <a href=\"http:\/\/theharrisonstudio.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">artist couple<\/a> now based in Santa Cruz whose work I have been aware of since college days &#8211; their early work taking the form of radical\u00a0 dirt, farm, and orchard making projects, were inspiring and charming dinner companions tonight at <a href=\"http:\/\/montalvoarts.org\/programs\/residency\/\" target=\"_blank\">Montalvo<\/a> (the artist residency where Lorenzo from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neromagazine.it\/n\/\" target=\"_blank\">NERO<\/a> has joined me for a few weeks to finish our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/wikidiary\/tag\/roma-mangia-roma\/\" target=\"_blank\">book<\/a>)\u00a0<em><\/em>recounting fascinating stories of the 1950&#8217;s in Florence; the early 1960&#8217;s New York Art scene (they were also at the 1974 Beuys&#8217;<em> &#8216;<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Beuys#.22I_Like_America_and_America_Likes_Me.22_.28performance.2C_1974.29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>I love America and America Loves Me<\/em><\/a><em>&#8216; <\/em>performance); Yale days with Nancy Graves, Bob Mangold, Richard Serra, Jennifer Bartlett; and eventually UCSD where they helped establish the art school with a tight knit community of other artists like the Eleanor and David Antin and Allan Kaprow &#8211; though now they are preoccupied with super ambitious long term projects\u00a0dealing with global warming called <a href=\"http:\/\/theharrisonstudio.net\/?page_id=394\" target=\"_blank\">The Force Majeure,<\/a> whose effects will outlive them way into the future&#8230;and the evening left me with a renewed sense of how long art &#8211; and it&#8217;s story are &#8211; and how short the day to day ups and downs of everything else is&#8230;and how helpful it is to stick your head up from the smallness of the moment every once in a while in to the bigger chain of time, backward and forward.
