- flanked by equestrian statues (Publio Morbiducci and Alberto de Felci) representing the Greek heros Dioscuri in Carrara marble - and features six arched bays across (Benito) and nine levels (Mussolini) in possible reference to the name of the fascist Italian leader who commissioned it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8230;or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Esposizione_Universale_Roma\" target=\"_blank\">EUR<\/a>, originally known as E42, the vast development south of Rome initiated by <a title=\"Benito Mussolini\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benito_Mussolini\">Benito Mussolini<\/a> in 1935 designed by a collaborative of Italian architects is where we went today in search of some adventures in fascist Roman architecture &#8211; which first fascinated me (to the horror of my Italian classmates and teaching assistants) while working on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fritzhaeg.com\/studio\/projects\/facolta.html\" target=\"_blank\">my thesis project for Aldo Rossi <\/a>at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iuav.it\/homepage\/\" target=\"_blank\">IUAV<\/a> from 1990-91 &#8211; and today I was struck by how much the buildings reminded me of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldo_Rossi\" target=\"_blank\">Aldo Rossi<\/a>&#8216;s greatest &amp; earliest works such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/95400\/ad-classics-san-cataldo-cemetery-aldo-rossi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cataldo Cemetery in Modena<\/a> (1971) and the more relentlessly austere designs of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giorgio_Grassi\" target=\"_blank\">Giorgio Grassi<\/a> &#8211; <!-- p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Times; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } --> but today <!-- p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Times; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } --> I was left feeling uncomfortable with our ability to have a purely aesthetic experience with architecture generated to promote brutal inhuman activity &#8211;
