Frescos are  extant at the <a title=\"Knossos\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knossos\">Knossos<\/a> site on  Crete<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crocus#cite_note-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> as well as from a comparably aged site on <a title=\"Santorini\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santorini\">Santorini<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The first crocus seen in the <a title=\"Netherlands\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netherlands\">Netherlands<\/a>,   where <\/em><em>Crocus species are not native, were from corms brought   back from <a title=\"Istanbul\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Istanbul\">Constantinople<\/a> by  the Holy Roman Emperor&#8217;s  ambassador to the <a title=\"Sublime Porte\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sublime_Porte\">Sublime Porte<\/a>,  <a title=\"Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ogier_Ghiselin_de_Busbecq\">Ogier  Ghiselin de Busbecq<\/a>, in the  1560s. A few corms were forwarded to <a title=\"Charles  de L'Ecluse\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_de_L%27Ecluse\">Carolus  Clusius<\/a> at the <a title=\"Botanical  garden\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Botanical_garden\">botanical  garden<\/a> in <a title=\"Leiden\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leiden\">Leiden<\/a>. By  1620, the  approximate date of Ambrosius Bosschaert&#8217;s painting (<\/em><em>illustration,   below), new garden varieties had been developed, such as the   cream-colored crocus feathered with bronze at the base of the bouquet,   similar to varieties still in the market.
