"Anna Halprin: Experience as Dance" by Janice Ross, 2008

…the recent biography by Janice Ross  – which I just finished today – of the dancer/choreographer (easy & narrow labels that are too small for her) who I LOVE, whose work (especially “Parades & Changes”) inspires me, whose approach to teaching & practice changed the way I thought about my own work & practice, whose desire for witnesses instead of an audience is so significant, whose husband (recently deceased) Lawrence Halprin kicked-ass with his environmental and landscape design (including Sea Ranch and the Nicollet Mall which I grew up with in Minneapolis) and his book “The RSVP Cycles: Creative Processes in the Human Environment” which I am just starting to spend some time with now…anyway – with the Anna Halprin biography I was finally able to see the trajectory of her life and work, as it responded and contributed the shifting culture of it’s time….I can’t say enough about how important I think she is.
